Who I Am

I am Hawaiian and Filipino, born and raised on the Big Island. After almost ten years of directing and conducting in my hometown, I decided to make the move to New York. I was blessed to secure my first professional theatre contract (at Westchester Broadway) only two months after moving to the NYC.

I graduated in 2006 from Harvard University, acquiring a B.A. in Music with a focus in conduction, music theory, and composition. During that time I also performed with the Harvard and Radcliffe Gilbert and Sullivan Players, Dunster and Lowell House operas, the Harvard-Radcliffe Dramatic Club, and the Harvard Glee Club.

Musical Theatre Credits: The King and I (Nat’l Tour, The King of Siam), Man of La Mancha (Asolo Rep), Cinderella (Alabama Shakes, Jean-Michel), Evita (Fulton Theatre), The Producers (Peterborough Players), …Great Comet of 1812 (Theatre Raleigh, Dolokhov/Ens), South Pacific (Westchester Broadway Theatre), The Fantasticks (Broward Stage Door, El Gallo).

Straight Theatre Credits: Our Town (Peterborough Players), The Doctor’s Dilemma (Peterborough Players), Where You Are (Peterborough Players).

MD/Conductor Credits: Cabaret, Les Misérables, Seussical, The King and I, …Putnam Spelling Bee, First Date, Always…Patsy Cline, The Magic Flute, Now. Here. This.

I have had many wonderful experiences as a music director, choir conductor, high school teacher, and composer throughout my career so far. I thoroughly enjoy giving back to the community, and I find great inspiration in teaching and seeing the growth in and development of others. I continue that work through my own private studio, Hana Hou Studio. I also actively look for opportunities to be engaging with students and aspiring professionals everywhere I work.
